Road
cycling

Long, steady, relentless. On the road your engine runs for hours at a time, and the only thing that stops it is an empty tank. Keep a constant drip of carbs and fluid going from the first kilometre and you'll still be turning the pedals when others crack.

01Steady carbs from a drink mix — sip, don't gulp.
02A gel every 30–45 min to top up before you dip.
03Electrolytes on hot days to hold off the cramp.

Mountain
biking

Punchy, technical, unpredictable. On the trail you can't fumble a bottle through a rock garden — you need fuel you can grab and chew in seconds, plus salts to cope with the heat, the effort spikes and the dust. Fast energy, zero faff.

01Chews & bars you can pocket and eat one-handed.
02Fast gels for the big climbs and tech sections.
03Electrolytes to handle heat, dust and effort spikes.

The science of not bonking

How to fuel a long ride

Your legs don't quit because they're weak — they quit when the glycogen runs out. That's the bonk: the sudden wall where power drops, your head goes foggy and every pedal stroke hurts. The fix isn't willpower, it's a plan. Take in carbs before you need them, keep them coming, and replace the fluid and salts you sweat out.

2–3 h before
Top up
Start the ride full. A carb-rich breakfast or a scoop of carbo / Vitargo tops off your glycogen stores so you're not chasing the deficit from kilometre one.

Keep it coming
Aim for 60–90 g of carbs an hour from a drink mix plus a gel or chew every 30–45 min, with 500–750 ml of fluid and electrolytes. Little and often beats one big hit.

Right after
Refill the tank
Within the first hour, get carbs and protein in to refill glycogen and start repairing the legs — so tomorrow's ride doesn't start in a hole.
